IB Music 11 and IB Music SL 12

Course Outline

The IB Music SL program is a unique course combining the study of music theory, music appreciation, and music performance and composition. Students are exposed to the various musical genres and styles throughout the world to gain an appreciation for the similarities and differences in music and musicians in different cultures. The course is designed for both serious experienced musicians who want to improve their performance and/or compositional skills, as well as less experienced musicians who want to improve their performance skills through ensemble participation. The course core is comprised of the study of musical perception and students choose one option of creating, group performance or solo performance.

Students final grade will be based on externally assessed components worth 50 percent and an internal assessment worth 50 percent. The internal component (50 percent) is dependent on the option selected by the student. The creating option requires pieces of coursework with recordings and written work. The solo performing option requires a recording selected from pieces presented during one or more public performances. The group performing option requires a recording selected from pieces presented during two or more public performances recording.  The external component (50 percent) consists of two assessments. Students write a final listening paper examination (30 percent) and are required to write a musical links investigation (20 percent), which requires a written media script of 2,000 words or less, investigating the significant musical links between two or more pieces from distinct musical cultures
